The Garden

I have big dreams for our backyard, but in reality it will take a few summers to check them all off the list.

Our garden plot is the majority of our back yard, which helps support my personal preference of eating home grown vegetables, and is along the idea of "food not lawns". At this point it is a bit too large for our commitment level, as well as our consumption level, so we are likely going to trim the size down a bit this year.

But last year, even though we didn't have possession of the house, the previous owner kindly let us plant the garden. He was an avid gardener, and had quite specific ways of doing things. He taught us a bunch of his tricks for planting, and then for the growing phase. And he helped us by watering and weeding our garden while he still lived there. We still have yet to plant our garden for this coming summer, but one of the most wonderful blessings we found is that the previous owners plot for garlic has miraculously sprouted some more!

Plans for the garden/yard include:

  • Grade around the house.
  • Move the fence to add an extra parking spot in the rear.
  • Prune the apple and crab apple trees.
  • Stain the deck.
  • Pave a small patio for fires. (This is a few years away.)
  • Paint the shed in an invisibility cloak.
  • Clean up ALL the renovation supplies that are somehow still in the yard.
  • Get rid of/update the questionable swing set.
  • Build cold frames.
It is a long list! But we don't expect it to all happen at once, even if I wish it could. Now if only there was a nice and easy way to design a backyard plan....

  1. Your garden looks wonderful, and I cannot wait to see your progress over time! Garden projects seem to take even longer than house projects. (or at least that is how it's been for me!)
